Wisdom Begins Here

Scripture Focus: Proverbs 1:1-7

The Fear of the Lord and the Book of Proverbs

The fear has moved.

Fear of... rejection, failure, disappointing people, being exposed, falling behind, making the wrong choice, losing control, not having enough, not being enough, our children struggling, our lives not mattering.

What Proverbs by fear

The word fear is not about terror. Rather, it refers to a sense of reverence and awe before God, which makes clear our small place in the universe. It’s a moral mindset that recognizes that we are not God and don’t get to make up what’s right and wrong for ourselves. The fear of the Lord is a posture of humility before God, embracing his definition of good and evil even when it’s difficult or inconvenient.

— The Bible Project

What you fear reveals what you believe.

“Beginning with God, knowing God, trusting God, and discovering the grace of God.”

Tim Keller

Knowing God

  • Beginning with God—not beginning with myself.
  • Knowing God—not imagining a distorted version of him.
  • Trusting God—not demanding complete understanding before obedience.
  • Discovering grace—not believing God is waiting to reject me.

“Wisdom is the accumulated insight of God’s people through the generations.”
