When Pride Makes Us Beasts

Scripture Focus: Daniel 4:31-35

“According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.”

Why God Takes Pride So Seriously

  • Proverbs 16:5 - Pride is an "abomination to the Lord."
  • Proverbs 16:18 — “Pride goes before destruction.”
  • James 4:6 — “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Fighting Pride:

Pride Grows Where It Is Celebrated

Ask: "What do I Celebrate?"

  • Who impresses me—and why?
  • Do I admire people primarily because they’re successful, or because they’re faithful?
  • Am I more impressed by someone who builds something big, or someone who quietly gives their life away for others?

Pride Loosens It's Grip Through Repentance

  • Psalm 32:5 - “I acknowledged my sin to you… and you forgave the iniquity of my sin.”
  • 1 John 1:9 — “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us…”

Practice

Make Confession & Repentance A Daily Rhythm

Closing Benediction

May you go with eyes lifted toward heaven— seeing pride for what it is, even when the world calls it greatness.

May God reveal the pride within your own heart— giving you courage to confess it, and humility to turn from it.

And when you confess, may you run toward the mercy of God— a mercy greater than your sin, a grace that forgives, restores, and makes you new.

And having received such mercy, may you walk humbly in this world— with nothing to prove, no glory to protect, and a life free to serve others and point to the greatness of God.

Amen.
