What God Means for Good

Scripture Focus

Joseph could no longer keep his composure in front of all his attendants, so he called out, “Send everyone away from me!” No one was with him when he revealed his identity to his brothers. But he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and also Pharaoh’s household heard it. Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?” But they could not answer him because they were terrified in his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please, come near me,” and they came near. “I am Joseph, your brother,” he said, “the one you sold into Egypt. And now don’t be grieved or angry with yourselves for selling me here, because God sent me ahead of you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there will be five more years without plowing or harvesting. God sent me ahead of you to establish you as a remnant within the land and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God."

(Genesis 45:1-8a CSB)

The three major themes woven throughout Genesis:

  • God’s Sovereignty & Human Agency (free will) — How do they relate?
  • Repentance and Transformation — Can people really change?
  • Reconciliation — Is there any hope for broken relationships?

“I am Joseph, your brother,” he said, “the one you sold into Egypt. And now don’t be grieved or angry with yourselves for selling me here, because God sent me ahead of you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years, and there will be five more years without plowing or harvesting. God sent me ahead of you to establish you as a remnant within the land and to keep you alive by a great deliverance. Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God."

(Gen. 45:4b-8a CSB)

  1. Can God's plan work in spite of flawed human choices?

God's sovereignty and human agency (free will)

  2. Can people fundamentally change?

    Transformation

  3. Can broken relationships be healed?

    Reconciliation

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and your ways are not my ways.” … “For as heaven is higher than earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts… so my word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do.

(Isaiah 55:8-9, 11 CSB)

But Joseph said to them, “Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives."

(Gen. 50:19-20 NIV)

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

(Romans 8:28 NIV)

What the story of Genesis offers us & calls us to —

  1. Forgiveness and reconciliation — with God and others

Everything is from God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ and has given us the ministry of reconciliation. That is, in Christ, God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and he has committed the message of reconciliation to us. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ’s behalf, ‘Be reconciled to God.’

(2 Corinthians 5:18-20 CSB)

Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, put on compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another if anyone has a grievance against another. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you are also to forgive. Above all, put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.

(Colossians 3:12-14 CSB)

  1. Transformation — life, understanding of God, vision of life & purpose

Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(Romans 12:2 CSB)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!

(2 Corinthians 5:17 CSB)

  1. Trust in God and His faithfulness (Sovereignty & Free Will)

I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Choose life so that you and your descendants may live. Love the Lord your God, obey him, and remain faithful to him. For he is your life.

(Deuteronomy 30:19b-20b CSB)
