The Sacredness of Life
Scripture Focus
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift."
(Matt. 5:21-24 / Exodus 20:13)
You shall not murder.
(Exodus 20:13)
So God created man in His own image…
(Genesis 1:27)
“Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him.”
(Gen. 4:8)
You shall not murder.
(Exodus 20:13)
Murder = ratzakh = To kill
Honoring Life in a Broken World
… what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?
(Micah 6:8)
Have I allowed anger, politics, or fear to shape how I see certain groups of people?
Honoring Those Who Protect and Preserve Life
Who in my life is carrying heavy burdens while trying to protect or care for others?
Honoring Life in Our Relationships
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.
(Rom. 12:18-19)
Is there someone in my life I have begun to treat with contempt instead of dignity?
CLOSING BLESSING:
May you go from this place seeing the image of God in every person you encounter.
May the Lord soften our hearts, teach us the way of peace, and make us people who speak life instead of destruction, reconciliation instead of revenge, and compassion instead of contempt.
May Christ strengthen those who protect, heal, and carry the burdens of others, and may His Spirit keep our hearts tender toward the brokenness of this world.
Go in the peace of Christ, and may your life reflect His mercy, gentleness, and love.
Amen.
