Holding What We Cannot Finish

Scripture Focus

Sarah lived 127 years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham rose up from before his dead and said to the Hittites, “I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

(Genesis 23:1-4)

So the field of Ephron in Machpelah, which was to the east of Mamre, the field with the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole area, was made over to Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city. After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan. The field and the cave that is in it were made over to Abraham as property for a burying place by the Hittites.

(Genesis 23:17-20)

These are the days of the years of Abraham's life, 175 years. Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. Isaac and Ishmael his sons buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with Sarah his wife. After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac his son.

(Genesis 25:7-11)

Sarah lived 127 years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. 2 And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan, and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

(Genesis 23:1-2)

And Abraham rose up from before his dead and said to the Hittites, “I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

(Genesis 23:3-4)

So the field of Ephron in…with the cave that was in it and all the trees that were in the field, throughout its whole area, was made over. To Abraham as a possession in the presence of the Hittites, before all who went in at the gate of his city. After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah east of Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

(Genesis 23:17-19)

Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years. And the LORD had blessed Abraham in all things… that I may make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac.”

(Genesis 24:1, 3-4)

Faith Does Not Cancel Sorrow:

… and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her.

(Genesis 23:1-2)

Trust Amidst What’s Unfinished:

“I am a sojourner and foreigner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”

(Genesis 23:4)

Passing the Promise On

“The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there.”

(Genesis 24:7)

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

(Philippians 1:6)

Closing Blessing:

May the God who keeps His promises steady you in the in-between.

May you trust Him when the harvest is unseen and the story feels unfinished.

May you grieve without despair and labor without fear.

May the Lord who began His work in you carry it farther than your lifetime and deeper than your understanding.

And when you must release what you cannot complete, may you rest in this:

The promise does not depend on you. The covenant rests in God.

Amen.
